Kosair part of new group to end child abuse

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Kentucky ranks among the top states where children are dying from child abuse. The victims who make up that statistic are often taken to Kosair Children's Hospital.

Kosair is part of a new group aiming to eliminate that stat.

'Partnership to Eliminate Child Abuse' is just that - several partners including medical professionals, local and state leaders. They formed the new group to better communicate with the public.

"We can't often prevent congenital heart disease or cancer in children, but this is completely preventable," Dr. Wright said.

Kosair isn't in this alone. UofL Pediatrics - Forensic Medicine, Kentucky Children's Hospital, local and state leaders formed the new group to better communicate with you and be a resource.

Dr. Wright reached out to print and broadcast outlets in hopes of keeping the conversation going, after a tragic event.

Merger between Louisville Water Company and MSD possible

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The merger of the Louisville Water Company and Metro Sewer District could save the metro as much as $14 to $24 million annually.

Tuesday afternoon a task force released it's findings for merger after working with national consulting group Black and Veatch. It follows a state audit of MSD that found significant management and business problems.

In a series of phases over several years, Louisville Water Company and MSD would merge and Metro Public Works would partner to a degree to help reduce operations costs.

The merger would cut costs for rate payers in the long run but, initially they're will be start up needs of about $900,000 that customers will likely see. The other big question is will the merger cause possible layoffs?

Big bargains in a small neighborhood store

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Dollar General seems to be the new Starbucks with new stores popping up on every street corner. The company recently opened store number 10,000 with 625 more planned for construction.

Unlike the Starbucks chain, customers won't spend high prices on coffee or anything else in the stores including top brand items recently added along with coolers to now sell milk and eggs and other basic need perishables.

Tawn Earnest is Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Dollar General. She says the economy has been a driving force for new customers to the store.

"Saving money never goes out of style," Earnest said. "Our company has built a model more relevant than others because we focused on keeping prices low."

She says even though stores are small, Dollar General has more retail locations across the country than any other retailer in America.
